1/9 Walled Forecourt and Garden Walls at Westfield adjoining - house on E and S

GV II

Forecourt and garden walls. Late C17 or early C18. High, red brick, Flemish bond, enclosing a courtyard as the formal approach to the house from the avenue to the E. Heavy sloping brick capping on projecting courses. Shallow buttresses at intervals. E wall extends to enclose walled garden on S side of house about 30 metres square. Taller, panelled, square brick piers with moulded brick caps flank the E entrance to the forecourt and one similar pier remains in the S gateway into the garden. In early C20 tall piers and cast iron floral double gates inserted in N wall of forecourt. Essential to the setting of Westfield. Formal cruciform layout of walled garden shown on 1767 plan of Westfield Farm in HRO.
