9/253 Church of St Michael
II
Parish church. C14 and 1794 with 1879 restoration. Walls of large blocks of pink and grey mixed sandstone with V-jointed quoins and eaves cornice. Graduated greenslate roof with kneelers. Square C14 3-storey west tower and north lean-to porch; C18 5-bay nave and single-bay chancel with north vestry. Late C19 porch has plank door. Tower has C19 2-light west window under 2-light bell opening and battlemented parapet with finials. South slate sundial dated 175- (last figure missing). Nave may incorporate part of the medieval walls. Tall round-headed windows. Chancel has C19 3-light east window and C19 lean-to vestry. Interior has pointed tower arch. Flat plaster roof with timber beams. C19 and C20 stained glass. Brass plaques to members of the Toppin family of Musgrave Hall. C18 panelled oak pulpit. Parts of a medieval tracery oak screen now enclosing a radiator, are thought to have been in Musgrave Hall until C20. Chancel has C18 pedestal font and oak cover. Various C18 and C19 wall plaques and C16 brass subscription plate. C18 altar rail with turned balusters.
