House Circa late C16 or early C17 with alterations of probably C18 and circa early to mid C19 and C20. Slate or shale rubble with chamfered slate plinth at front with slate dripcourse immediately above. First floor at the rear is slate hung with old scantle and ragslates. Asbestos slate roof half hipped at right hand end and hipped at left end. The roof at the left end has been lowered is lower pitched and has lower ridge; gable and roof to porch. Slate rubble aerial stack to left of centre with slate drips and rendered cap; right hand end stack has later rendered shaft and rear lateral stack is rendered and has large offset and later rendered shaft; there is another C20 lateral stack at the back of the lower end. Plan: Long single depth rectangular range, the higher end to the right; a central wide cross-passage with a 2-storey porch at the front. Two approximately equal size rooms to the right of the passage, the first appears to have been unheated the second room at the right end has a gable end stack. A larger room to the left of the passage is heated from a rear lateral fireplace and to the left beyond this room the lower end appears to have been rebuilt probably in the C18 when the whole lower end from the left of the park had its roof line lowered. In the early to mid C19 the interior was remodelled and a new staircase was inserted into the passage. C20 alterations probably include the insertion of a partition into the room to the right of the staircase to form a cloakroom at the back and the widening of the doorway between the passage and the right hand room to extend the stairhall. The 2 room to the left of the passage are said to have been one lounge huge room before a partition was inserted in the C20. The extreme left end was divided aerially into a pantry, lavatory and a side entrance lobby. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical range. 3 window range to left, 2 over 3 windows to right, the first floor windows are not aligned over the ground floor windows and a large gabled 2 storey porch to right of centre. The windows are circa mid C19 3-light casements with glazing bars the ground floor window to left of centre has a large mid C19 4-light casement with glazing bars and a hoodmould. The ground floor windows to the right are all sashes 2 are C20, one with original slate hoodmould above and the right hand a mid C19 12-pane sash with 4-pane side lights. The large gabled porch to right of centre has a fine chamfered slate round arch doorway with imports, the first floor is slightly jettied out on a chamfered slate course with a string course below, the reverse of the plinth which continues around the base of the porch; the first floor porch window is slightly to left of centre and has a slate hoodmould and a mid C19 2-light casement with glazings. At the back of the porch to the right a later slate mounting block. Inside the porch old timber benches on either side and an inner doorway with a fine oak, doorframe with true mitres and double ovolo moulding with part of hourglass steps with small bird-like figures carved above; the original door which is made of horizontal planks at the back and vertical planks at the front with applied moulded style and rails forming 12 small panels original decorated wrought iron strap hinges and wooden cased lock in working order; the timber lintel above is ovolo moulded but hacked as key for plaster; and old mate flag floor inside the porch. Rear elevation: is asymmetrical with various Cl9 and C20 casements and a C20 sash to left in a large blocked opening with a slate hoodmould. At the centre over the ground floor a scantle slate pentice roof open fronted with a stone wall left side and later glazed to the right forming a conservatory. To the right of the pentice the large rear lateral stack projects. Small circa C19 single storey lean-to outshut at the right hand (north) gable end with a scantle slate roof. Interior: ground floor room to right of centre has a large rear lateral fireplace with slate rubble jambs and replaced wooden lintel. The right hand end room has a C20 chimneypiece gable end wall flanked by mitres with C20 architraves. The ground floor rooms have early to mid C19 6-panel doors. At the back of the passage a circa 1840 staircase with closed string stuck balusters and moulded handrail ramped up to turned newels. Front floor room to left of centre and centre room have back-to-back fireplaces to right hand end room has gable end fireplace all with chamfered slate lintels, and stone jambs and with hearths of pitched slate, two of which have been cemented over. C18 fielded 2-panel doors on the first floor. Roof: 3 trusses over the right hand end, the principal rafters have straight feet, mortices for threaded ridge-piece and purlins and the straight collars are notched and lap-jointed. The purlins, ridge-piece and moat of the rafters have been replaced. The later roof trusses over the left hand end may be C18; the collars are halved, lapped and pegged to the faces of the principals which have mortices apexes; the rafters purlins and ridge-piece entirely replaced. The solid masonry cross-wall to the left of the passage rises the full height of the house to the roof apex but the remains of the solid wall to the right of the passage and the next cross- wall to the right rise only to first floor level.
