11/6 Garden Walls on S side of Hadham Hall -
GV II
Walled garden. Circa 1668 incorporating as S half of E side, 1572 wall with lower part of 1440, piers of C16. S gateway now with wrought iron gate with '1903' in Arts and Crafts design (Minet (1914) 74-5). Walled enclosure 40 metres square created against S range of house when it became a tenant farm after the Capel family moved to Cassiobury and much of the Hall had been demolished. A spur wall extends 15 metres to S from near E side of S gate. Lower part of S wall of demolished E part of S range, remains as garden enclosure, with blocked openings. Tall red brick walls with narrow bricks irregularly bonded and ogee moulded brick-on-edge coping. Important element in the group of historic structures at Hadham Hall.
