6/56 Garden ornaments on terrace south of Dodington House G.V. II
Pair of sarcophagi, urns, seats, terrace walls and steps, piers, railings. Early C19. Limestone, with cast iron railings. Low wall surrounding terrace to south of Dodington House (q.v.), about 35 metres long at front, returned to north about 2 metres, all about one metre high, in sections divided by dies each with recessed panel and moulded edge, each section of wall with similar recessed panel, central steps to south, wall ramped down at sides and swept in a curve at bottom. To east and west, a pedestal with urn with fluted base and round bowl with swags. Attached to south front of Dodington House (q.v.) to east and west, a stone seat with curved arm-rests. At outer sides of terrace to east and west, an elliptical plinth with recessed panels to east and west each surmounted by stone sarcophagus on moulded pedestals; each sarcophagus about 4 metres long with recessed panels and circles to sides all with beaded mouldings and moulded edge to top. Terrace walls swept in a curve around sarcophagus plinths, with steps to each side of plinth; to west, the plinth is about one metre high and terrace wall continues about 50 metres to west. To east, sarcophagus plinth is about 2 metres high to accommodate the slope of the ground, and steps meet to east to form single flight with terrace wall stepped down to each side, terminating in pair of square piers, each with plinth, moulded band course and flat top with moulded edge. Attached to steps at east, about 40 metres of cast iron fencing of Regency pattern, in 25 panels with intersecting bars and knob finials to uprights, one panel missing.
