Farmhouse. Circa early-mid C17 extended with rear outshut in circa late C17. Stone
rubble including some C19 brick dressings; stone rubble stacks with C19 and C20 brick
shafts; mostly rag slate roof with hipped ends.
Three-room main block facing south with lobby entrance right (east) of centre onto
axial stack serving back-to-back fireplace. End stack to left (west) room. The
continuous two-storey outshut across the rear appears to have been added in circa
late C17 with a straight joint in the right (east) end wall. Behind the left room is
a kitchen with end stack. Cross passage through the outshut from centre main room
between the kitchen and other rear rooms comprising dairy, open well stair and
unheated service room. Access to the stair from the right hand front room or through
the dairy from the rear cross passage.
Main block two storeys. Three-window front of C19 12-pane sashes. The centre and
right windows being symmetrical about the front doorway with C19 panelled door behind
contemporary flat roofed timber porch. Rear windows C19 casements with glazing bars
and rear roof continues down as catslide over rear outshuts.
Interior: main range shows mainly C19 plaster and joinery with C19 and C20
fireplaces. The original plan appears to survive intact suggesting earlier features
survive. The right hand room contains two C18 china cupboards and there is a
projection for a cloam oven adjoining the fireplace of the central room. To the rear
however good quality features are exposed. The oak framed doorway from the cross
passage to the dairy has an ovolo-moulded surround with scroll stops containing
contemporary 9-panel door which is studded with scratch moulded rails and muntins and
hung on strap hinges with fleur-de-lys finials. Remains of another ovolo moulded
door from dairy to stair well. From the unheated service room to the stair however
is a superior oak doorframe possibly reset; ovolo moulded surround and elaborate bar,
run-up stops enriched with rosettes and floral trail. The contemporary 9-panel door
here is studded, has bead-moulded rails and muntins and is hung on strap hinges with
fleur-de-lys finials. The stair has open string which was possibly once closed,
turned newels, flat moulded rail and heavy turned balusters. The stair well each
side comprises fairly large field panels with scratch moulded muntins and stiles, as
do the rear partitions forming a corridor through the first floor. Entrance to
bedroom on right (east) with ovolo moulded doorframe with scroll stops and
contemporary 3-panel door. Roof comprises a series of A-frame trusses with pegged
and lap-jointed collars and apices which may be contemporary with the late C17
alterations although usually considered of mid C18. Some mid-late C20 repair work.
This house has an unusual plan form which retains intact and includes some relatively
high quality original details with unspoilt details of the mid C19 part remodelling.
