ST 77 NE DODINGTON C.P. DODINGTON PARK
6/71 Ornamental pigeon loft about 80 metres east of Cascade Building G.V. II
Ornamental pigeon loft, possibly incorporating former ice house (situated east of lake), now folly. Early C19. Limestone ashlar, rubble with stone dressings to north and west. Picturesque Gothic style. North elevation has tower with central pointed arched window, ogee multifoil inner head, moulded surround, hollow- chamfered hood mould with stops; weathered plinth has square-headed opening in chamfered surround, ashlar long and short quoins, cornice and embattled parapet carried round side elevations. Left return has pointed arched opening blocked in brick, with ball at point of arch. Right return has small pigeon entry and perch in moulded stone surround, to right aloggia on plinth, with large pointed segmental-headed arch opening to cellar recess, with keystone, arms of Codrington family set on shield in recess above keystone; to each side of shield a pierced balustrade, moulded balusters with pointed arch between each, corner die to right has panel to side with 3 blank inverted shields. Rear of loggia has stone benches, and plain pier at south east corner with raised panels to sides; rear of tower has pointed arched door, cornice returned from front and plain parapet. Interior: pigeon holes to each side of front window, small stone fireplace to left with trefoil head and pointed arch, stone mantel over. Important landscape feature of Dodington Park (q.v.) on small hill overlooking lake.
