Details
TQ 2980 NE and 2981 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER FRITH STREET, Wl 58/85; 71/10 23.11.78 Nos. 39 and 40 GV II Terrace houses. Part of a c.1743 row by John Balgrave, carpenter. Stock brick with earlier brickwork to 2nd floor, concealed roof. 4 storeys. Each front 3 windows wide. Mid C20 shop fronts to ground floor. Upper floors have flush framed sash windows, except top floor and the 2nd floor of No. 39 where they are recessed, and flat gauged red brick arches, glazing bars intact to No. 39 but casements in part to No. 40. Parapet with coping and sill bands. Interiors: No. 39 retains dog leg staircase with heavily moulded closed strings, turned balusters (boxed in) and columnar newels with small pendants, elements of cornices,panelling etc.; No. 40 has pilastered opening from passage-hall onto same staircase as at No. 39 and 1st floor front room with cyma panelling and box cornice etc. Survey of London; Vol. XXXIII.
