Details
SW 97 NW ST MINVER LOWLANDS DAYMER LANE, Trebetherick 3/311 Undertown including terrace walls and sunken garden walls to west, south and south west II House, terraces and sunken garden. 1928 (datestone) extended in circa mid to late C20. By Robert Atkinson for Ernest Betjeman. Stone rubble, partly slate hung. Random slate roof with gable ends. Large projecting stone rubble hall stack with inglenook with lean-to roof on left hand gable end and axial stack, originally gable end stack to right of centre. 2 room single depth plan with large hall living room on left and smaller dining room on right, both heated by gable end stacks; turreted stair in projection to rear of hall. Small single storey service range of one room plan on right, extended in mid to late C20 to form an overall 4 room single depth plan. Arts and Crafts style. 2 storeys with steeply pitched slate roof sweeping down to first floor level on front elevation. Shallow projecting single-storey bays to right, left and centre. Original range on left has an almost symmetrical 3 window front with roof sweeping down over shallow porch on square stone rubble piers to left with glazed doors and over shallow bay on right with 2-light casement. Central slate hung 2-storey bay with 4-light casements on ground and first floor. 2 full dormers with flat roofs to right and left. To right, the single storey service range has been partly remodelled and extended to form a two-storey, two window range. The roof sweeps down forming a sheltered porch with shallow bay to right. Two full dormers with flat roofs and casements. Rear elevation; large semi-circular stair tower with flat roof. Datestone EEB 1928 above entrance to left. Interior with complete joinery and fittings, well designed timber newel stair with ball finials and simple chimney-pieces. The garden is terraced to the west, south west and south of the house as the ground drops down towards the sea; low slatestone rubble walls. To the west is a small sheltered sunken garden constructed of low slatestone rubble walls. Original drawings of house by architect R. Atkinson in possession of owner. House built for E. Betjeman, father of Sir John Betjeman, poet Laureate from 1972.
