3/323 Porthilly Farmhouse
GV II
Farmhouse. Circa late C16 or early C17. Service range partly rebuilt in C19 and
C20. Rear wing added in early C20. Slate stone rubble. Cement washed rag slate
roof to main range with hipped end on left hand side and gable end on right. The
service range on the right (east) has been largely rebuilt with a lower rag slate
roof with hipped end on right. The remains of the stone rubble west wall of the
front service wing survives incorporated into a store.
Plan: possibly originally of three room and through passage plan higher end to left
with a service range continuing in a front right hand wing on the south east. The
hall is heated by an axial stack which is shared by the inner room. In circa early
C19 the service range was partly demolished with further demolition work in the mid
C20; remains of the lower west side wall to the front service wing survive
incorporated into a store. In circa early C20 a wing was added to the rear of the
inner room and higher side of hall.
2 storeys, regular 3-window south front; main range with lean-to outshut on left, 12-
pane sash and early C19 16-pane hornless sash in dressed stone segmental arches.
First floor with three 16 pane sashes, two without horns. To right, remains of
ground floor of service range with first floor partly rebuilt.
Rear elevation with rear entrance to through passage; granite segmental arch with
chamfered jambs, and straight cut stops. Further reset circa C17 jamb in porch to
rear. Rear wing with brick dressings and sashes.
Interior: Through passage retained with partition on higher side removed. Hall with
plaster ceiling and blocked fireplace. Inner room with C20 grate. C18 2-panel door
in first floor. Roof structure not accessible but projecting feet of principals
appear slight. Several probably reset chamfered ceiling beams with straight cut
stops in store which is probably the remains of the service range on front right.
