Details
LOPPINGTON C.P. BURLTON SJ 42 NE 10/21 Burlton Hall - GV II House. Late C19 incorporating parts of a C17 building. Timber framed (much renewed to C17 part) with red brick infill, part set in herringbone pattern; machine tile roofs with ridge and end stacks. 2 storeys and attics. Multi-gabled front with original L-shaped house (hall and cross- wing) to left. Late C19 casement-fenestration, window above porch in bracketed oriel. Ornamental gabled wooden porch inscribed 'Remember yr Laterena/1420' incorporates some Jacobean panelling with C19 carving (including grotesque figures) in imitation. Right gable has external stone-faced stack, which incorporates 2 rectangular leaded windows with hoodmoulds to ground floor. Right return has 2 full-height gabled bays. Statue niche to gable of cross-wing has carved male figure (probably C14 or C15) holding a staff. Interior: inspection not possible at time of resurvey (February 1986) but likely to be of interest. The statue possibly comes from the Church of St. Michael, Loppington (q.v.) where there is an empty statue niche to the west tower.
