13/27 Much Hadham Hall(formerly listed as "The Hall") 22.2.67
GV I Country house. Built 1726-9 for the Rev William Stanley DD probably by John James of Greenwich or a colleague. Red brick with stone dressings, heavy wood, modillioned, eaves cornice round the whole building, hipped red tile roof. W entrance front is two and a half storeys and 5 windows. Double hung sashes with thick glazing bars, rubbed brick lintels, projecting stone keystones. Centre bay projects slightly and has raised pedimented attic with segmental headed sash window, which matches flanking dormers. The Ground and 1st floors are a modification of the Venetian window: rounded headed door, fan with radiating bars and narrow side lights in stone surround; arched 1st floor sash and side lights. 1 window, 2 storey C19 extension on S has thin glazing bars to Ground floor and re-used upper sash. E elevation to large terraced garden is same as front, but centre projection with no narrow side lights and Ground floor entrance in channelled stone surround. A curved single storey wall joins with C19 extension on N, which has a re-used 1st floor sash. Fine contemporary work inside includes panelled hall with 4 richly carved pedimented doors, large fireplace and full entablature. Grand staircase has alternating fluted and barleytwist balusters. Good panelled room on N side; contemporary servants' staircase on S. SE corner has c.1790, Adam style interior, fireplace with consoles and figured panel, niche in S wall. (Pevsner (1977) 256).
