4/248 Molesworth Manor
GV II
Rectory, now private house. 1854 (datestone). Built for Rev. Sir Hugh Molesworth,
possibly by William White who restored the Church of St Petroc Minor, Little
Petherick (qv) in 1858 for Sir Hugh Molesworth. Extended in early C20. Stone rubble
and snecked slate stone with moulded plinth. Steeply pitched slate roof with gable
ends. Stone rubble axial and end stacks with moulded caps.
Plan: Original plan probably of double depth arrangement with wide entrance hall to
left of centre; study to left heated by end stack, principal room to right heated by
axial stack and service room beyond. Stair and stair hall across rear of passage and
study and service rooms to rear right. There were probably further service rooms
accommodated in a courtyard to rear and the stables and coach house are attached to
the right hand side with service rooms above. In circa early C20 2 bay windows were
added to the front elevation and a cross wing containing 2 large principal rooms was
added to the left hand side, continuing in a wing to rear.
Gothic style.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic with an irregular 1:1:2:1 window front. The circa
early C20 extension to left is in a similar style to the main range. Entrance
originally to left of centre with tall gabled bay set slightly forward on left and
lower gable bay to far right. Gabled original porch with moulded 2-centred arch with
banded stone in the gable end above. The entrance is flanked by 2 circa early C20
bay windows with an original 2-light mullion and transom window to right. Above are
4 sashes and casements with original chamfered and stopped frame to far right and
attic window in gable above with decorative cusped framing. 3 gabled full dormers
with fish-tail slate hanging. C20 extension to right with gabled bay set slightly
forward with ashlar granite dressings. Set back to right coach house and stables
with service wing above with C19 sashes.
Interior: Gothick plaster frieze in hall has arcade of 2-centred arches similar in
style to the Dower House, Padstow (qv) which is probably of similar date and the
early C19 plasterwork at Prideaux Place, Padstow (qv). Room to right of passage has
similar plaster frieze and original 4-centred arched granite chimney-piece. The
open-well stair to rear is impressive with irregularly alternating barley-sugar
twist, turned and moulded balusters and moulded rail. Stair window with Molesworth
Arms and initials and date HHM. 1854 The joinery appears largely complete and the
stiles, rails and muntins of the doors are characteristically chamfered and stopped.
