GV II*

House. Circa, late C16 or earlier, extended in the late C17, partly remodelled in the early C18 and extended in the early C19. Stone rubble. Slate roof with gable ends and hipped end to front wing. End and axial stacks with brick shafts. Stone rubble circa C17 end stack to earlier rear wing. Plan: The house is of a complicated arrangement which has been extended in the C17, C18 and C19. The late C17 main range is of 3-room and cross passage plan with a C19 wing on front left and late C16 range to rear left. The remains of the original house appear to be the 2-room plan building to rear left; of overall 'L' shaped plan, the left hand room heated by an end stack and the cross wing to right possibly either unheated or heated by an end stack in the projecting gable to front right. The original entrance has probably been altered; the front and back doors are not opposing and the main entrance is incorporated into the later main house. It is uncertain whether this was the full extent of the house or whether the later work incorporates part of the earlier house. The main range which is probably of the late C17 has a 3-room and cross passage plan with entrance to right of centre and higher end on left; the inner room to far left being built directly in front of the cross wing of the earlier range. The central room is small and was probably unheated, the axial stack in the higher cross wall being a later insertion. There is a circa late C17 bolection moulded doorframe to the right hand room and several C18 doors. In the early to mid C18 a stair was added in a projection to the rear of the passage. In early C19 a wing of 1-room plan was added to the front of the inner room on left and an outshut was added to the rear of the lower end on right. In circa mid C19 an outshut extension was added to the rear of the central room. Exterior: 2 storeys. Regular 1:3 window front with projecting front wing to left. Main range to right has a C19 stone rubble porch, flanked by 2 replacement C20 12- pane sashes with 3 above. The wing to front left has a C19 12-pane sash on ground and first floor. The lower earlier range set back to left has a C20 window on ground floor and plank door to right. There are several small blocked openings in this range. Interior: Cross passage with bolection moulded doorframe and C18 door into right hand room and C18 door with cusped 'H' hinges into central room. The floor joists to the central and right hand rooms are roughly cut and the ceilings are high. The ceiling to the inner room on left is at a lower level and the floor joists are more massive although still roughly cut. Partition inserted dividing inner room. C18 dog-leg stair in projection to rear of passage; deep moulded rail and turned balusters. First floor and roof structure of main range not accessible. In the earlier range the floor joists are fairly massive, waney and chamfered, some with runout stops. The massive fireplace in the left hand end wall has a cloam oven and the lintel has been replaced. The roof structure above the left hand room is very rough and probably of C18 or C19. The roof structure above the cross wing was not inspected.
