DITTISHAM SX8654-SX8754 MANOR STREET 17/292 DITTISHAM (north side), Nos 1 and 2 (Glendale Cottages)
GV II
Row of 2 cottages formerly 3 cottages, but originally probably one house. Probably C17, remodelled in C18 and/or C19. Painted and roughcast stone rubble. slate roof with gabled ends and red clay ridge tiles; No 2 to the left has been reclad in asbestos slates. Rendered gable end and 2 rear lateral stacks with clay pots, one of the lateral stacks projects slightly and has set-offs. Plan: A row of 2 cottages, formerly 3 cottages at right angles to the road. The original plan is uncertain and it is not clear whether it was originally one house and later extended and divided into cottages or a row of cottages from the beginning. It is now a single depth 4-room plan, the 2 centre room heated from lateral stacks at the back, the right hand room has a gable end stack and the left end room is unheated. If there were a through passage its position is unclear. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window west front. First floor has circa early Cl9 and later Cl9 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars and C20 2-light casement to the left. On the ground floor late C19 and C20 4- pane sashes, a small single fixed-light window to the left and a C20 3- light window with top opening lights, all with wooden lintels. No 1 has a late C19 glazed and panelled door to the right with a late C19 or C20 slated gabled canopy on brackets. No2 has a late C20 divided glazed door to the right of centre and another similar door at the left end of the front the latter with an asbestos slate canopy. The left hand end of the front wall projects slightly. The right hand south gable end facing the road has a C19 2-light casement on the ground floor with glazing bars. the rear, east, elevation is blind and has 2 lateral stacks, the right hand stack projects slightly. Interior:m Only the interior of No 2 was inspected. The right hand of the 2 rear lateral fireplaces has a timber lintel with a thin chamfer with ogee stops, the left hand fireplace has a cambered timber linel with run-out stops to the chamfer. Closely spaced light cantling and roughly dressed ceiling beams. Roof: was not inspected but it was reported that the old roof under the existing roof was removed in C20; it was thatched and had straight principal rafters.
