NEWBY WITH MULWITH NEWBY PARK Balustrade, 2 sets of steps and stone bench on south side of Newby Hall

GV II

Balustrade, 2 flights of steps to south and bench to west. c1875 probably designed by William Burges for Henry Vyner and Lady Mary Vyner. Ashlar. The balustrade encloses the parterre on the south side of the house, and projects southwards to enclose a garden pond. The balusters are bulbous, piers have urns and ball finials. The bench at the west end is curved, with central urn and ball finials crowning the curved back. William Burges was employed by Lady Mary Vyner to design the Church of Christ the Consoler (qv) and he was involved with the first stages of the south garden and statue walk (qv).
