WITNEY MARKET SQUARE SP3509N (West side) 10/193 Nos.18 and 20 (The Eagle 06/02/70 Vaults Public House) and No.22 (Formerly listed as No.18 (Eagle Vaults Inn), Wing of Eagle Vaults Inn, No.22) GV II
Nos.18 and 20. House, now public house. Early C17, extended to rear in early C18 and refronted c.1850. Coursed limestone rubble with Cl9 rendered front; gabled artificial stone slate roof (partly visible); brick stacks. 2-unit plan with through-passages to centre and right; extended to double-depth plan in early C18. 3 storeys; 3-window range. Central 6-panelled door with decorative overlight and bracketed flat hood; through-passage on right. Moulded stone architraves to C20 ground-floor windows and mid C19 sashes. Raised storey band; moulded cornice beneath parapet. Early C18 block of similar materials with hipped roof to rear. Interior: deeply chamfered beams; quarter-turn stairs, with early C18 turned balusters to top; attic to front has C17 collar truss with trenching for through purlins. No.22 to left: house, now shop and part of public house. C17, refronted early and mid C19. Of similar materials, with stone slates to front of roof and early Cl9 stucco to left. L-plan with rear left range, 2 storeys; 2-window range. Mid C19 doorway with C20 double doors, 6-pane sash and C20 window set in moulded stone architraves to right; early C19 shop front to left, with 8-pane sash above C20 door and flanking bow windows with moulded cornice. C18 two-storey and one-storey wings to rear, with concrete-tile and corrugated iron roofs; late C17 ovolo-moulded window architrave to left. Interior: first floor not inspected.
