Details
TQ 3080 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER GREAT NEWPORT STREET, 72/22 WC2 No 1 (The Frigate Public 15.1.73 House) (formerly listed as Cranbourne Public House) G.V. II Corner public house. c.1890. Red brick with painted stone bands and dressings, slate roof. Lively Jacobethan "gin palace". 4 storeys and dormered mansard. 2 windows wide, corner turret and 3 window return to Upper St. Martin's Lane. Elaborate painted stone and polished granite public house front to ground floor with corner splay entrance of double panelled and glazed doors with fanlight and segmental arched bar windows divided by enriched pilasters. Upper floors have sash windows in stone frames, those on 1st floor semicircular arched with keystones and enriched spandrels; 2nd floor with oriels, scrolled pediments and enriched aprons. Pedimented stucco gabled attics and balustraded parapet over dentil cornice. The corner turret is surmounted by a cupola and short spire with weathervane. 1970s interior designed on naval theme.
