Details
MOLLAND SOUTH DOWN LANE SS 8028-8128 20/90 Little Champson - II Farmhouse, possibly latterly divided. Early to mid - C17 with probably mid - to late C19 outshut addition; remodelled and enlarged in the late C20. Random stone rubble to ground floor, with rendered cob to first floor and rear. Gable-ended corrugated- asbestos roof, probably formerly thatched. Coursed stone rubble square stacks with offsets, mostly rendered. Plan and development: Three-room C17 plan, facing south-east. Central room with axial stack forming baffle-entry, smaller room to right with external end stack and large room to left with external lateral stack to rear. The house probably began with a 2-room end lobby-entry plan, extended by one room to the left in the later C17 (see lower eaves to left and change in line of front wall to left of doorway). Probable C18 or C19 outshut addition to rear of right-hand 2 rooms. Late C20 wing at rear behind central axial stack. Two storeys. Exterior: Asymmetrical front. Four windows to first floor and 3 to ground floor; late C20 two- and 3-light wooden casements. C20 half-glazed doors between first and second windows from left and first and second windows from right. Interior: Left-hand ground-floor room has 2 chamfered cross beam and half beam with notched stepped runout stops, and open fireplace to rear with stone jambs and plain wooden lintel. Central ground-floor room with plastered spine beam and half beam to rear, and open fireplace with stone jambs and chamfered wooden lintel with runout stops (fireplace reduced in width). Right-hand ground-floor room chamfered spine beam and chamfered half beam to rear with runout stops, and open fireplace with stone jambs and wooden lintel with runout stops. Roof with C17 principal-rafter trusses.
