4/16 Barn at Thorley Hall (25 metres SW of house) -
GV II
Barn. C16. Tall 5-bay timberframed weatherboarded with steep old tile roof. Low red brick sill wall. Half-hipped roof with projecting gabled porch at centre of S side and double doors to yard in middle of N side. Heavy chamfered bay posts with pronounced step at jowl, and tension braces down to mid-height tenoned rail, at each corner and each side of central bay. Long curved braces support tie beams. Chamfered wall plate. Clasped purlin roof without collars. Heavy angled queen struts support purlins in notch at junction with principal rafter. Curved wind braces. Most rafters and wall studs and the brick sill appear to be original as well as the main frame. The barn appears as a sketch on the estate plan of 1672/3, and in Buckler's drawing of Thorley Hall c.1832, both in HRO. Of special importance for the survival of so much of its original fabric
