4/11 5 monuments on S of Parish Church of - St James the Great

GV II

5 monuments. 1717, 1750, c.1750, c.1840, 1909. Group of stone monuments by S wall of church. 2 C18 headstones with shaped tops and carved with skulls in relief, to John Flack 1717 and Robert Flack 1750. A contemporary stone with shaped top set by path 3 yards to S set up by landlord drawing attention to previous 2 stones. Square gabled pillar as Frere family monument c.1840 with coloured coat of arms and inset bronze oval panel with Christ crucified on an anchor, said to have been copied from 'a monument seen in France' (EHAS Trans 1899). A tall tapering rough stone stele 10 yards S of tower with rectangular bronze panel with Christ crucified on an anchor, to Esther Frere 1909, probably designed by Eustace Frere.
