Details
NORTH MOLTON BURCOMBE HILL SS 72 NW 13/133 Burcombe Farmhouse and former - granary adjoining to north-west II Farmhouse and adjoining former granary. Probably mid to late C16 house with late C18 or early C19 additions. Mid to late C19 remodelling, and late C20 alterations. Mainly uncoursed stone rubble, partly cement rendered. Front refaced in C19 snecked dressed sandstone. Gable-ended asbestos-slate roof, with scantle slates to gable- ended rear wing. Rendered stone stack with C19 red brick tops, with scantle slates to gable-ended rear wing. Plan and development: Two-room central-entrance plan, facing south, with integral end stack to left and external end stack to right. Possible former 3-room and cross- passage plan consisting of hall with external end stack to right, cross-passage and service room to left with integral end stack, and former inner room to right, now demolished. Probably C18 gabled wing projecting at right angles to rear of right- hand room and probably late C18 or early C19 granary projecting at right angles to rear of left-hand wing. C19 remodelling included the refacing of the front and probably the demolition of a former inner room to right. Staircase inserted in former cross passage (present entrance hall) at the same time. Eaves probably also raised in the C19. C20 lean-to between wings to rear. Two storeys. Exterior: Symmetrical 3-bay south front; late C20 two-and three-light wooden casements in C19 openings, those to ground floor with stone flat-arched heads. Central C20 half-glazed door with C20 rendered gabled porch. Large C18 wing to rear with ground-and first-floor C20 two-light casements in old openings to right and C20 half-glazed door in old opening to left, all with wooden lintels. Gable end of granary wing has loft doorway with wooden lintel and ground-floor C20 two-light wooden casement. Interior: Right-hand ground-floor rooms with joists spanning front to back. Late C16 or C17 open fireplace to right with dressed stone jambs, chamfered wooden-lintel with straight-cut stops, and cast-iron bread-oven door. C16 plank and muntin screen is said to survive (old list description, 1967, and present owner, 1987) in wall between central entrance/staircase hall and right-hand ground-floor room. It is said to have bevelled muntins and a middle rail, and the present door (C19) is said to be in the C16 doorway. Entrance/staircase hall with C20 staircase replacing similar C19 staircase. C19 matchbording on walls. Old floorboards to first-floor rooms. Mid to late C19 four-panelled doors throughout. Seven-bay unblackened roof over main range, incorporating much reused timber. Roof trusses consist of straight principal rafters not meeting at apex and separated by pegged collars (or saddles) with king posts supporting ridge piece. Also with tie- beams. Pairs of purlins. C20 rafters.
