NORTH MOLTON EAST STREET (south side), SS 7229-7329 18/146 Workshop ranges including smithy - adjoining Thorne House to south GV II
Workshops including smithy. Probably mid C19, with mid C20 alterations. Uncoursed stone rubble with some red-brick dressings. Gable-ended and hipped scantle-slate roofs. Plan: Asymmetrical U-plan. Long range adjoining at rear of left hand end of Thorne House (q.v.), with 2 short ranges adjoining at right angles to south and west forming U-plan. Smithy in short returning range. Long east range converted to domestic use in the mid to late C20. Two storeys. Exterior: Smithy has boarded loft door with segmental brick head and ground-floor 2- leaf boarded door with segmental brick head. South range with small-pane loft window to right and large ground-floor boarded door. Main (east) range refenestrated in the mid to late C20, with C20 two-light wooden casements. Gabled loft dormer off-centre to right. Interior: Complete working blacksmith's shop in south-east range with painted brick forge, working bellows in metal frame, with long handle, bench with tool rack, and cobbled floor. It is said that this was formerly a wheelwrights shop.
