Details
THORPE MALSOR (off) CHURCH WAY SP 87 NW (south west side) 5/99 Thorpe Malsor Hall 25.10.51 GV II Kanor House. Early C17, refenestrated C18, south front remodelled 1817, later C19 alterations. Ironstone ashlar with limestone dressings, stone slate and Welsh slate roofs. Chamfered plinths, coped gables with finials. 3 grouped coped stone ridge stacks, mostly with octagonal cast iron pots. 2 storeys plus attics, 5 bays wide by 7 bays deep, E-plan. Symmetrical east front has a central 2-storey gabled porch with C18 ashlar doorcase and C19 8-panel doors. On either side, two 6/9 sashes and beyond, two 6/6 sashes. Above, a range of eight 6/6 sashes and above again, 4 hipped dormers flanked by single 6/6 sashes in the gables. All the sashes have projecting surrounds. Symmetrical south front has moulded eaves and a central 2-storey parapeted bow window with 3 full height 6/6 sashes. Beyond on either side, 3 similar sashes. Above, 9 smaller 6/6 sashes. All the windows have flat arches. Above the central window, a crest and the date '1817'. Irregular north side has an off- centre mid C19 parapeted addition and to west a 2-storey 2-bay addition with a hipped end. Irregular fenestration with C19 wooden cross mullioned casements and glazing bar sashes. Rear has a recessed 2-bay centre with moulded cornice, flanked to left by a 2-bay double gabled wing with early C19 doors and windows. To right, a hipped 2-storey addition and a gabled wing with glazing bar sashes and blank panels. The interior, remodelled early and mid C19, has a flagged central hall with cantilevered stone winder stair with wrought iron balustrade and scrolled ramped handrail. Ground floor rooms have simple marble fireplace and 5-panel doors. The Manor and Rectory of Thorpe Malsor was bought in 1622 by John Maunsell of Chicheley, Buckinghamshire, and has remained in the hands of the Maunsell family since then.
