3/1 Brook Farmhouse
- II
House. C16 origins, alterations and addition of the early to mid C19. Whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, bitumen painted slate roof gabled at ends, end stacks, 1 axial stack. The original house appear to have have a 3 room and through passage plan, although the passage no longer exists. The passage was probably immediately to the left of the axial stack which would have heated the hall. The lower left of the axial stack was heated by a gable end stack to the left; the inner room by the right gable end stack. The outshut at the rear of the lower end appears to be an addition. The parallel range added to the rear of the higher right end in the circa mid C19 may be co-eval with the refenestration of the front. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front with a C20 flat roofed glazed conservatory in the centre, C20 front door behind conservatory on front to the left. 2 ground floor 16-pane sashes to the left, right-hand sash 20-pane. 2 first floor windows left 3- light casements with some square leaded panes; first floor windows right, 2-light casements, 4 panes per light. Interior The important surviving feature is the oak plank and muntin screen with wide planks and chamfered stopped muntins on the hall side, and a cambered doorway. The hall has a chamfered cross beam and exposed joists. The 3 fireplaces have stone rubble jambs and plain timber lintels and have probably been reconstructed; the hall stack is cob. C19 roof trusses, probably coeval with the rear right addition.
