Details
NORTH MOLTON SS 7229-7329 18/171 Garden walls, gates and gatepiers - adjoining Court House to south GV II Garden walls, gate and gatepiers. Probably late C17, incorporating reused C18 gateway. Minor late C20 alterations. Squared and coursed stone rubble, with coping. Sandstone ashlar piers to south. C20 coping. Walls enclose formal garden to south of Court House (q.v.). Walls project at right angles from each end of main front, return a short distance then sweep forward in 2 quadrants to form a semi-circular plan with with gateway at the centre (gateway blocked, probably in the late C18). Gateway on left-hand (west) return, possibly a later C18 insertion. Gateway in left-hand side wall possibly inserted or altered in the C20. The right-hand (east) wall bounding the churchyard possibly incorporates some C16 fabric (see reused gateway). Quadrant walls lower than side walls, and ramped up at each end. (Wall in blocked gateway also ramped up to piers). Central blocked gateway to south has pair of ashlar square piers with moulded plinth and cornices. Gateway in left-hand return consists of pair of piers topped by fluted stone urns, and probably C18 wrought-iron gate (galvanised in C20) with dog bars, scrolled panels, repousse work and scrolled crest. Gateway in left-hand side wall (possibly a C20 insertion or alteration) with galvanised C20 gates. C16 gateway in wall on churchyard side consisting of moulded Tudor arch with carved leaf ornament in spandrels and returned square hoodmould. Boarded door.
