1/24 Monument to Sir Bevil Grenville at NGR ST 7219 7034, formerly listed 1.2.56 in Weston C.P.

Monument to Sir Bevil Grenville. Erected in 1720 to commemorate the Royalist leader killed at the Battle of Lansdown on July 5th 1643. Ashlar. Square on plan and approximately 25 feet high in two stages. The lower stage has a moulded plinth and is rusticated; it bears a slate tablet inscribed with a quotation from Lord Clarendon's account of the battle. The upper stage is crowned by a bold egg and dart moulded cornice with a moulded cap and it is surmounted by a griffin which holds a Grenville shield; sunken slate tablet in 2 faces and relief carvings of Grenville heraldry and trophies on other 2 faces. Scheduled as an Ancient Monument - Avon County No. 150. Restored: early - mid C19 by E. Davis of Bath and 1970's - 80's.
