NORTH MOLTON THE SQUARE (north side), SS 7229-7329 18/193 Hillside View - GV II House. Probably C16, altered in the C17. Further early to mid-C19 alterations. Rendered, probably over stone rubble or cob. Scantle-slate roof, gable-ended to left and hipped to right. C17 stone stack to rear and brick stack to left. Possibly a late Medieval open hall house, consisting of hall with projecting shallow square bay to front, wide through passage and former service room (present kitchen) to left and former inner room to right. Possibly formerly open to the roof. Possible C17 alterations included the insertion of the first floor in the hall insertion of integral lateral stack to rear of hall. Shallow projecting square bay in front wall of hall could be part of the original plan or could be an alteration of the C17 or even the early to mid-C19. C19 staircase in the cross passage, possibly a later replacement of a previous C17. Roof rebuilt probably in the C17. Wall between hall and inner room removed in the C20. Two storeys. Exterior: Asymmetrical 3-window front; C19 three-light wooden casements on each floor to left and right and projecting bay with first-floor early C19 sixteen-pane glazing bar sash (each leaf with 4 lights across and 2 up) and ground-floor mid to late C19 boxed 4-pane sash. C20 half-glazed door between first and second windows from left. Right-hand end wall with C19 three-light wooden casements to each floor. Interior: Central ground-floor room (hall) with cased cross beam and window seat. Wall between hall and inner room removed in the C20. C18 four-panelled doors to rooms off through-passage, with L-hinges. Fragmentary remains of rear cruck blade (embedded in stack) at left-hand (lower) end of hall, with trenches for former purlins and notch at apex for former diagonally-set ridge-piece. Apex formerly mortice and tenoned. Rest of roof rebuilt in the C17, with trusses consisting of pincipal rafters and collars.
