Details
NORTH MOLTON THE SQUARE (north side), SS 7229-7329 18/195 The Old Vicarage and garden walls - adjoining to south GV II Vicarage, now house. Early C19, remodelled in the mid to late C19. Rendered, probably over stone rubble. Gable-ended scantle-slate roofs, hipped over staircase projection to rear. C19 red-brick stacks, one rendered. Plan and development: two-room central-entrance plan. Central entrance hall with square staircase projection to rear and flanking rooms with end stacks, external to left and integral to right. Lower probable former service wing set back to left. Later C19 remodelling included refenestration, addition of porch and probably the garden walls to the front. Two storeys. Exterior: Three bays; mid to late C19 plate-glass tripartite sashes to outer bays and first-floor C19 four-pane sash to centre. Central early C19 six-panelled door with side beaded lower 2 panels and glazed (probably a later alteration) upper 4 panels. Central mid to late C19 gabled wooden porch with pierced shaped barge boards, half-glazed door with ogee-headed side lights, and 3-lights to side walls. Former service wing set-back to left with early C19 sixteen-pane former glazing bar sashes (each leaf with 4 panes across and 2 up), converted to top-opening casements, probably in the C20. Staircase projection to rear has early C20 twenty-pane sash (each leaf of 4 panes across, top leaf of 2 panes up and bottom leaf of 3 panes up). Interior: Entrance hall with late C19 encaustic tiled floor. Possibly early C19 staircase with open string and 2 balusters per tread. Left-hand ground-floor room has early C19 recess at rear with reeded pilasters. Left-hand ground-floor room (kitchen) has early C19 fireplace with beaded surround and mantelshelf. Early C19 four-panelled doors throughout with moulded architraves. Panelled window reveals and shutters. First floor not inspected. Mid to late C19 low stone-rubble garden walls to front with chamfered stone copings and square piers with shallow pyramidal stone caps. Small wrought-iron gates flanking porch, leading to areas of garden to left and right of entrance.
