Walls, retaining walls to terraces, gates, gatepiers and central flight of steps.
Early C17, probably for William Bassett of Claverton Manor (demolished). The
walls enclose an outer (eastern) court and 2 terraces at the west end; the east
court is approximately 60 x 60 yardsand the terraces are approximately 60 x 10
yards. The north and south walls are tall rubble walls with coping; the south
one is stepped up at intervals and the north one is completed at the east end by
the rear of Manor Farmhouse and the Outbuildings (q.v.). The eastern walls of
the outer court and of the westernmost terrace have rubble (court) and ashlar
(terrace) plinths surmounted by an ashlar balustrade with pierced strapwork
panels divided into 9 bays by ashlar pedestals which have engaged balusters to
front and rear; the outer 2 bays are blind; moulded cornice. In the centre of
the easternmost wall (court) is a pair of panelled ashlar gatepiers with a moulded
cornice and pierced obelisk finials on moulded bases; later iron gates with
curved bar and spear finials. The eastern terrace is retained by a rubble wall
approximately 5 feet high and the two terraces are divided by the central steps;
ashlar,in 2 flights, the lower one is curved out on each side to form a wide
outward radius; strapwork balustrades as the main walls.
