HENTLAND CP HOARWITHY SO 52 NW 3/74 Church House 20 yards east of the Church of St Catherine

Schoolroom and schoolhouse, now unoccupied. Circa 1865. Sandstone ashlar dressings and rubble, brick with hipped slate roofs, brick and sandstone stacks. Rectangular plan with main elevation to east. Two storeys and attic. East elevation has 1:1:1 windows, single light to left gable front, sexfoil above central entry and 3-light mullioned window to right hand side; ground floor left hand window has single light, with weathered buttress to left corner; right hand side has full-height canted bay and hipped roof but with no angle windows, ground floor window is 3-light mullioned with single transom and relieving arch. Neo-Romanesque centre with one column and leaved capital dividing two trefoiled heads. Under the right trefoil a square- headed entrance doorway with rounded shoulders, door with three rows of three panels has top three glazed in form of lancets; left trefoil has stairs rising to south, leading to panelled door to schoolroom. South elevation has reliev- ing arches above two storeys of mullioned windows, the upper with staggered mullions and with entry to right under chamfered and pointed arch. Interior of schoolroom has two-bay roof with collar truss, angle struts from king- strut above collar and principals supported by braces; friezes around wall- plate level have painted panels of animals, flowers and birds, including monkey and goats. The schoolroom is very conspicuous from the opposite bank of the river to east and south from where it forms an important element in the setting of the Church of St Catherine (qv).
