7/63 The Lodge and Gatepiers at south, at entrance to Claverton Manor - II
Lodge and gatepiers, to Claverton Manor (q.v.). Probably early - mid C19. Ashlar with a stone slate roof and octagonal ashlar stacks. In a plain late Gothic style. The dominant feature is a 2 stage lookout tower which is gabled on each side with cusped bargeboarding. Tall, 4-centre headed openings to the upper stage with an open arcaded balustrade. Studded plank door in moulded and 4-centre headed surround. To the south of the tower is a pair of tall octagonal stacks. A 2 bay wing projects to the west from the rear of the tower; 2 storeys near the tower and a single storey beyond; 2-light casement windows in ovolo moulded surrounds. This wing is partly masked by a front entrance wing of 2 bays: rigbt bayprojects as a gabled wing, casement windows in ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds; bay window in the wing; bargeboarded gables. At the far east is a projecting entrance lobby, gabled and surmounted by an open bell- turret; 4-centre headed outer door in chamfered surround with a hoodmould.
