GV II*
Country house. C16 and C17, substantially remodelled in mid-C19. Timber- frame, limestone and sandstone ashlar with tiled roofs and diagonal shafts to stacks. Roughly rectangular plan aligned almost east/west with entrance front to south. Cellar, two storeys and attic. South elevation has 1:3:1:2:1 windows with mullions and transoms. One central and two outer Dutch gables. Left gable has 3-light window in attic and two storeys of semi-circular bay windows each of nine lights, the upper bay with balustrade. C19 porch to left of centre has strap-work frieze. In attic above the porch a Dutch attic gablet with 2-light window. Central part has two-storey canted bay window and 2-light attic window in Dutch gable. To right of centre and immediately to left of the right-hand outer gable is a blocked moulded 4-centred arch reported by RCHM as leading formerly into small courtyard. Right-hand gable has 2-light attic window and three lights to windows of lower storeys, all with hoodmoulds. Each of the Dutch gables has three moulded finials to apex and shoulders. Attached to right-hand side is a C19 wing recessed behind the right gable front with a small yard entered through a pair of gate-piers with oval finials. Rear elevation to north has three gables to centre with close- studded timber-framing and moulded bressummers, all much restored. Interior (not inspected) reported by RCHM as having C17 plaster ceilings and panelling with painted panels in attic. The small rear courtyard is roofed in glass supported by early C20 open-work girders. In the south-west corner of the court- yard is a small wooden tower, probably c1900, with a fish-scale cupola. (RCHM Vol I, p 236-7).
