7/51 Higher Cotley Farmhouse -

GV II

House. Circa early C17 or earlier origins, C19 or C20 addition at right end. Whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, some whitewashed rendered brick at right end, wheat straw thatched roof hipped at left end, gabled at right end, projecting front lateral stack with tall brick chimney shaft, axial stack (formerly gable end stack), rear brick chimney to lean-to. The late C17 plan was 3 room and a through passage, lower end to the right, the hall heated from the front lateral stack, the lower end heated by a gable end stack, the inner room unheated. The roof trusses suggest that the house was re-roofed in the C18 when the eaves may have been raised. 2 rear lean-tos are probably largely C19. In the C19 a straight stair was inserted against the rear wall of the hall and the rear door of the passage was blocked, a rear corridor was made on the first floor. The house has been extended at the right end, possibly incorporating a former outbuilding, to give a 4 room and through passage plan. 2 storeys. Irregular 4-window front, the axial stack marking the right-hand end of the C17 building. Large lateral stack with slate set-offs and brick shaft to the left, doorway to the passage to the right of the stack. Eaves thatch eyebrowed over the 3 first floor left-hand windows. Fenestration of 2-light casements with small panes, some are iron casements, others have C20 square-leaded panes. Additional entrance into right-hand room on extreme right. Interior The passage plan survives, rear doorblocked. C20 screen replaces former screen to left (higher side) of passage. The hall fireplace has been largely rebuilt, the hall has a chamfered cross beam with ogee stops. The lower end fireplace is blocked. The pegged collar rafter roof is probably C18 with slim, low, straight collars, halved and pegged to the principals and an unusual arrangement at the apex where the diagonally-set ridge is held by long pegs forming a V with one of the principal rafters. An attractive cob and thatch house which retains its early plan.
