DODDERHILL CP ASTWOOD LANE (south side) SO 96 NW 6/7 Astwood Farmhouse 15.6.76 - II*

Farmhouse. Late C16 with alterations of c1800 and C20. Timber-frame, front faced in brick, lath and plaster infill, tile roof. H-plan, hall aligned east/west, ashlar lateral stacks to cross-wings and rear (north) of hall, each with three star-plan brick shafts, early C19 caps. South front: brick, two storeys and attic lit by 1:2:1 windows: 3-light C19 casements under segmental heads, the two in the hall range with gablets above, and all have recessed panels above and below them; 1:2:1 windows, 3-light C19 casements with rectangular panes, copper cames and segmental heads; ground floor 1:1:1 windows as above, door to left end of hall range with late C20 glazed porch. Framing: visible in all of the other elevations; close-studding with mid-rail to each floor, straight tension braces; gable of east cross-wing close-studded with two collars, tie-beam jettied out with decorative brackets to wall-plate; west cross-wing gable filled witn herringbone framing. Rear entrance (at east end of hall) has studded door of c1600.
