Details

NORTH MOLTON THE SQUARE (south side) SS 7229-7329 18/199 Swan House - GV II House, latterly public house. Probably early to mid C19, possibly the remodelling of a C18 house. Rendered, probably over stone rubble. Gable-ended scantle-slate roof. Rendered brick stacks with weatherings. Plan: Two-room central-entrance plan, with staircase to rear of entrance hall and pair of external lateral stacks to rear. Outshut at right-hand end. Two storeys, with one-storey outshut. Exterior: Nearly symmetrical 3-bay front; C19 small-paned 2-light wooden casements. Central C19 four-panelled door (upper panels glazed and lower panels beaded flush) with rectangular overlight, chamfered wooden frame and C19 bracketed gabled wooden porch with shaped panelled barge boards. One-storey lean-to outshut to right-hand gable end with shaped verge boards. Gable ends of main range also with shaped barge boards. Interior: Four-panelled doors with moulded architraves. Early C19 staircase with rectangular-section stick balusters, closed string and turned newel post. Old winder stair to cellar, with C18 four-panelled door at top. Cellar below left-hand room with cobbled floor and former barrel-drop to front.
