SY 59 NW MAPPERTON MAPPERTON 4-12-1951 8/91 South Stables (Barn and Cart-Shed)
GV I
South Stable Block, probably always Barn and Cart-Shed. Dated R.B. 1670 on keystone on south elevation. Dressed stone walls. Stone slab roof with stone gable-copings. One storey with attics. North elevation from west to east: barn porch, gabled, with large round-headed entrance with moulded architrave. Massive dropped key-block, and big moulded imposts. 3 pigeon-holes under the eaves. 4 sham windows, of 2-light mullion-and-transom design, matching friezes and pediments to north stable. Blind window-spaces, black infill. Doorway, with matching architectural details, also sham. Large elliptical-headed doorway, fitted with panelled doors. The south wall has 2 wide archways. Roof construction: principals come into wall, onto individual block bedded in below eaves. This block crudely jointed into side of a wall-post, supported on a stone corbel. Collars jointed into side of principals. Source: R.C.H.M. Dorset I, p 156(3).
