II
Farmhouse. Probably early C17, remodelled in early to mid C18 and remodelled again and extended in early C19. Painted stone rubble, and partly plastered and slate-hung at rear. Asbestos slate roof with gabled ends. Hipped roof of right hand addition at front. Large slate rubble stacks with tapered tops and slate dripstones, one projecting at either end, and altered front lateral stack in angle of later front addition. Plan: Three room and through passage plan with front lateral stack heating hall and gable end stacks heating inner room and kitchen at lower end left. In circa early to mid C18 the lower end room was turned into the parlour and the kitchen was put into the inner room. In early Cl9 a wing with two rooms and a central entrance passage was built onto the front of the higher right end of the house and the hall lateral stack was enlarged to serve the left of these two rooms as well as the hall. The right hand room of the addition is now the kitchen and the original inner room is now the dairy. The staircase parti-tioned off in the rear the hall appears to be a late C19 insertion. Another straight staircase at the higher end is of indeterminate date. The hall was divided into 2 rooms in C20. Exterior: Two storeys. Regular 3-window range to the original house, left, plus symmetrical 2 window range to early C19 addition projecting from front of higher right end. All early C19 sashes with glazing bars and exposed boxing, all 16-panes except for left hand ground floor of lower end and central former hall window which are 2-light sashes each with 12-panes. All windows to original range have timber lintels and hall window has dripmould and straight joint either side showing that the original hall window was wider. The addi-tion to higher right end has cambered brick arches to ground floor windows; the ground floor right replaced with C20 casement but in original opening; and central C20 stone rubble porch. The original passage doorway has original moulded doorframe with ovolo fillet and ogee moulding, stepped hollow stops, heavy plank door with nail studded cover moulds and wrought iron hinges, and chamfered timber lintel. Later porch with simple slate hood on brackets sup-ported on later wooden posts. The rear elevation has 2 early C19 sashes to first floor, one 16-panes, the other 12 panes, and two light window to rear of former hall with 12-pane sashes. Interior: Lower room at left end turned into parlour in early to mid C18, has plaster ceiling with moulded ovals and fielded panel shutters and door to pas- sage, and plain C19 chimneypiece. Ovolo moulded beam with bar stops above partition between hall and passage. Hall fireplace blocked with C20 fireplace. Partitioned off at rear of hall a late C19 staircase and C20 partition dividing hall into 2 rooms. Plastered partitions between hall and passage and hall and original inner room which was subsequently used as the kitchen and is now the dairy. Another stairs put into higher end of house. On the first floor there are many C18 fielded 2-panel doors and at higher end a probably C17 painted plaster figure which is possibly a soldier holding a sword. Roof: 3 clear principal rafters at higher end with mortices for threaded purlins. The roof over the hall and lower end appears to have been replaced in late C19 or C20.
