Details

THORNDON THE STREET TM 16 NW 3/103 Town Farmhouse - GV II Farmhouse. C16, in at least 2 phases to form a single long 4-cell range. Timber framed; roughcast render to front and rear, the gable ends partly cased in tarred brick and partly plastered. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys. Various casement windows of C19 and C20 date. C16 4-centre arched doorway into cross- passage with mid C20 boarded door. 2 further doors. Internal stack with rendered shaft. Some exposed studding in hall; evidence for one window with large chamfered mullions. Plain joists exposed in upper bay. Good open fireplace. One-bay parlour with closely-spaced plain joists; the chamfered bridging beam is very close to the chimneybreast and appears to be later than the wallposts. Service end modernised, part now with mid C20 stair. Only the main components of the frame are visible on the upper floor. Cell at left end is a later addition, now used as an outhouse: quite widely-spaced studs, half of first floor joists replaced. Roof not examined.
