- II
Public house. Circa early C17, substantial C20 internal remodelling. Whitewashed rendered cob; corrugated iron roof over thatch, gabled at left end, half-hipped at right end; projecting left end stack, projecting stack on front wall, inserted axial stack. Originally a 3 room and through passage plan, the long lower end, to the left, heated from the gable end stack, the hall heated from the front lateral stack and an unheated inner room. A rear outshut at the lower end is probably a later addition, C20 2-storey addition to rear right. The passage only exists in part, the front passage door is blocked. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 6-window front with an approximately central circa early C20 timber and glazed porch to the left of the hall stack. The porch has a timber archway and turned balusters and the tiled roof is carried over a single-storey bay window with stained glass to the left. C20 casements, those to the left and extreme right with diamond leaded panes, 2 windows in the centre are probably earlier small pane casements. The rear elevation of the inner room (to the right) has a C17 3- light timber mullioned window. Interior Very altered but with some C17 features surviving. The hall has a chamfered stopped cross beam and partly-blocked fireplace with a timber lintel. Both the lower end passage screen and screen between inner room and hall survive in fragmentary form. Roofspace not thoroughly inspected but the left-hand roof truss, over the lower end is mortised at the apex at probably early C17 with co-eval rafters and purlins. A closed truss divides the lower and higher ends, the higher end roof may be of interest. The building is said to be documented in 1635. The Kings Arms is on a prominent corner site in the village.
