Penson Farmhouse

(Formerly listed as Penson Farmhouse, NORTH HUISH)

II
Farmhouse. C17 with probably C18 and C19 additions. Local slate rubble. Slate roof with hipped end to the left and gabled end to the right. Large stone rubble chimney stack at right hand gable end and large rendered axial stack near left hand end.

Plan: The original plan cannot be described with certainty because the interior was inaccessible at the time of the survey in 1986. However it appears to be a two room and through or cross passage plan, both rooms heated from gable end (axial) stables. The smaller left hand room the parlour and the large right hand room the hall/kitchen with what appears to be an integral one storey plus attic outshut at the right hand end. Behind the left hand room (parlour) a stair tower probably containing a framed staircase and at the left hand end an integral outbuilding with external stairs at the front giving access to the loft above. The porch at the front of the passage is probably an C18 addition. There is a two storey unheated wing behind the right hand room and passage which may also be C18 with a C19 single storey outshut in the angle to the right; the gap between the wing and the stair tower was probably infilled also in the C19. In the C20 a conservatory was added at the back of the outbuilding to the left. If the outbuilding at the left hand end and the outshut at the right hand end are integral and not additions it is a most interesting C17 plan. However they are possibly additions to a more conventional two room plan, although there is no sign of masonry joints on the front wall which seems not to have been rebuilt because of the partial blocking of the original hall/kitchen window.

Exterior: Two storeys. Irregular three window range plus a doorway in the outbuilding to the left and a small window in the lean-to on the right. The three window house part has C19 three-light casements on the first floor and similar window on the ground floor left in the partly blocked larger opening with a slate hood mould, the ground floor left hand window is a C19 16-pane sash. Open-fronted probably C18 lean-to porch to doorway to left of centre with old wooden benches inside and a C20 glazed plank door. Slate window cills and wooden lintels, and projecting plinth. The integral lean-to at the right has a very small attic window. The integral outbuilding on the left has external steps up to the first floor doorway which has a late C19 plank door.

Rear elevation has stair turret to right of house part and partly rendered projecting wing to left with a lean-to outshut in the angle to the left and an unfilled space between the wing and the stair turret to the right. C20 glazed conservatory behind the outbuilding at the far right end.

Interior: Not accessible at the time of survey but panelled internal window shutters were observed. There may be other interior features of interest including the roof structure.
