2/15 Barn at Hall Farm

5 stead aisled barn. Early C14 timber frame structure with brick walls added C18. Some flint also used. Thatched roof. North side has 2 symmetrically placed double timber doors rising into swept eyebrows under thatch. At intervals are blocked slit ventilation lights. C20 doors inserted right of centre. 4 stepped buttresses remain. Half hipped roof, but originally gabled, the east gable with tumbling. South side has opposing entrances now blocked. 2 C20 sloping brick buttresses to west and several C18 brick piers throughout. Interior. Brickwork changes from Flemish to English bond. 8 bays. 7 pairs square section aisle posts stand on timber sole spurs running from base of wall posts. Many sole spurs now replaced with brick and wall posts either removed in C18 or embedded in brickwork of that date. Curved braces rise on both sides of aisle posts to arcade plate and inwards to tie beams. From aisle posts further spurs connect with wall plate of outer timber members. Curved passing braces rise from wall posts, trenched through wall plate spur, through aisle posts and tenon into underside of tie beams. From tie beams Queen struts rise to lower of 2 tiers through purlins. No principal rafters or windbracing. Hall farmhouse demolished.
