STEDHAM WITH IPING ELSTED ROAD SU 82 SW 10/27 Fitzhall 18.6.59 - II

House. The present building consists of 2 parallel ranges. The north range dates from the C18 rebuildings of Fitzhall. 2 storeys 4 windows. Ashlar set in galletting with red brick window dressings, quoins, stringcourse and top to the parapet. Tiled roof. Glazing bars intact. Porch added in 1932 in Georgian style with engaged Doric columns, triglyph frieze, curved pediment and double doors of 6 panels. The library in the north-west corner of the house contains early C19 book recesses. The south wing range was added in 1932 on the site of some remains of the Elizabethan house which were largely service quarters. The first house on this site was built by Christopher Bettesworth in the reign of Elizabeth I. This was largely rebuilt by James Piggot who died in 1780, and the last remaining portion of it was demolished in 1932.
