Holbrook and Menlove memorials approx. 35m north-east of chancel of Church of St. Michael

Pair of chest tombs. Circa 1789. Sandstone. Both rectangular with
moulded plinths and capping, chamfered flat-topped ledgers and plain
corner pilasters. West tomb (Menlove memorial) has projecting semi-
circular inscription panel on south with fluted corner spandrels; similar
inscription panel on north with carved heads of angels commemorates John
Menlove (died 1789) and-his sister, Elizabeth (died 1790). Recessed
moulded rectangular panels to ends, west with inscription to Sarah Menlove
(died 1781). Later inscriptions to various members of Menlove family
on top ledger, flat top of which has 2 round-headed brass plates, east
to John and Judith Menlove (died 1819 and 1823 respectively), and west
to their daughter, Mary (died 1804) and son, John (died 1814). East
tomb (Holbrook memorial) has projecting inscription panel on south cutting
through 2 carved floral emblems, commemorating Thomas Holdbrook (died
1788) and his sister, Anne (died 1789). Similar inscription panel on
north has round-headed brass plate to their parents Thomas and Anne Hold-
brook (died 1804 and 1814 respectively). Oval-shaped recesses to ends
have brass plates to later members of family. 2 brass plates to top
ledger, earlier to John Holbrook (died 1769) and his wife, Anne (died
1774). Both tombs formerly stood within railed enclosures, of which
stone plinths survive.
