House, now commercial premises, with ground floor shop. C16
with early C19 refronting, and shopfront. Timber-framed, with
yellow stock brick, Flemish bond, with parapet projecting over
dentil course, and steeply pitched old tiled roofs with one
box dormer to front, and one facing Priory Street. Tall brick
chimney shared with No.3 Baldock Street (qv).
2 storeys and attics. 2 sash windows with glazing bars under
flat rubbed arches, central sash window beneath lintel; 1 sash
window to Priory Street. C19 shopfront at left turns corner to
Priory Street, with corner entrance, and double leaf glazed
doors, with lower reeded panels. Reeded pilasters flank
entrance ends of display windows on Baldock Street and Priory
Street frontages. Arcaded plate glass windows, with pierced
vent above. 5 panel door, with top 3 panels glazed, in narrow
architrave surround, with cut bracketed cornice hood.
Carriageway of No.1 Priory Street to left (qv) shows exposed
timber studs and curved bracing of left hand end wall.
The courtyard plan with No.1 Priory Street, and Nos 3 and 5
Baldock Street (qv) may relate to an historic inn site, and it
is thought that The Griffin Inn occupied the land during the
mid C17.
