GV II

House, formerly public house in C19, now offices. C18 refronting of C17 building, C19 alterations, and extensive renovation in 1970s. Timber-framed, encased in red brick, Flemish bond, old tiled roof behind parapet. 3 storeys, dentil and moulded brick cornice. 4 sash windows, with glazing bars, in reveals under rubbed flat arches, to first and second floors. C19 shopfront, framed by pilasters with elaborate carved foliated console brackets. Timber pilasters, framing door entrance and display windows across facade. Inserted early C20 glazing bars. Fascia, with moulded surround, and moulded wood cornice, possibly former blind box, above. Timber-framing exposed internally. During C19 this was the John Barleycorn Public House. (Perman D: Ware UD. List of buildings of special arch or historic interest: 1993-: 46).
