Reasons for Designation

94 High Street, Poole, a former early-C19 dwelling which was altered to a commercial premises around 1900, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

Architectural interest:
* dating from the early C19, where there is a presumption in favour of listing buildings which retain a significant proportion of their historic fabric;
* for its restrained and well-proportioned classical façade.

Historic interest:
* it is one of group of listed buildings in High Street which together demonstrate the architectural development and diversity of the town.

History

94 High Street was built as a house in the early C19 and was converted to a commercial premises around 1900 when it became the offices for Archibald Yeatmen, a solicitor and commissioner for oaths (Poole High Street Project, see Sources).

Details

Former house, early C19; converted to commercial premises with domestic accommodation above. Later alterations.  
 
MATERIALS: the building is constructed of painted brick, with gauged brick dressings, rendered chimney stacks and a tiled roof.  
 
PLAN: it has a double-depth plan.  
 
EXTERIOR: it is a three-storey building with a three-window range to the front elevation. To the left-hand side of the ground floor is a six-panel door and a radial fanlight above, set within a semi-circular headed doorcase that has panelled reveals and attached columns supporting an open pediment with dentilled cornice. The early-C20 shop front has pilasters with reveals, console brackets, fascia and an awning box. It has a central pair of modern doors flanked by large modern windows. The first-floor windows have gauged brick flat arches and six-over-six-pane sashes; the second floor has three-over-three-pane sash windows. There is a cornice above and a low parapet.  
 
INTERIOR: it is understood to have a rear dogleg stair with column newels, stick balusters and curtail steps. On the first floor there is an early-C19 marble fire surround with corner roundels. The ground floor has been completely altered.
