TQ 2980 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER TRAFALGAR SQUARE, WC2 82/45 No 66 (National Westminster Bank) G.V. II Bank. 1871 by F. W. Porter,built as the Union Bank. Portland stone and polished red granite, slate roof. Corner block running through to Spring Gardens, in busy, rather Venetian, Italianate style. 4 storeys, including attic storey, dormered pavilion roof and basement. 3 windows wide to Trafalgar Square, one window bowed corner, 5-window west return, one window bowed corner and 5-window wide south front. Corner bank entrance. Flat arched ground floor windows with enriched spandrels, square headed architraved and corniced 1st floor windows and round arched 2nd floor windows with fluted pilasters and enriched spandrels. Superimposed orders of attached columns (pilasters to south front) define each bay with continuous entablatures; dentil cornice to 1st floor, bracketed to 2nd. Paired pilasters flank bowed corners. Wrought iron continuous balcony to first floor, guards to 2nd floor windows and iron cresting in front of set-back attic storey. Pedimented round arched dormers over corners. Clustered "column" chimney stacks on attic blocking course. Ornate cast iron area railings.
