Memorial, 1863, to soldiers of the 8th the Kings Regiment who died in the Indian Mutiny. Limestone Celtic Cross on sandstone base. Front of cross bears three relief scenes, now very worn, the central one showing fighting, the lower one showing a burial. Sandstone base bears inscription:
THIS CROSS / COMMEMORATES THE SERVICES AND DEATHS / OF / 243 OFFICERS, NC OFFICERS AND PRIVATE SOLDIERS / LOST BY THE 8th KINGS REGIMENT / WHILE ENGAGED IN SUPPRESSING THE GREAT SEPOY MUTINY/ OF 1857-1858 / SOME DIED IN BATTLE, SOME OF WOUNDS / SOME OF DISEASE/ ALL / IN THE DEVOTED PERFORMANCE OF DUTY.
To left return: ERECTED AT PORTSMOUTH 1863 To right return: REMOVED TO CHELSEA 1877. To rear: REMOVED TO LIVERPOOL 1911.
