SJ3288SW CHESTER STREET 789-1/15/43 (West side) Monument to the Building of Mersey Tunnel

GV II

Monument commemorating construction of Queensway (Mersey) Tunnel. 1934. By Herbert Rowse. White ashlar base with polished black granite shaft. Tall fluted shaft on high base with chevron and acanthus decoration in bands at base and top. It is capped by a fluted glass bowl out of which a ribbed cap carries a banded sphere. Base is inscribed with names of the engineer and architect of the tunnel, Sir Basil Mott J.A. Brodie, engineers, Herbert Rowse, architect, together with the names of the construction teams and committees. The monument was designed to occupy an axial position in the tunnel approach but is no longer in its original position.
